Dog (Design by John Montroll)
This is a cute little dog that I folded this weekend, which reminds me of a daschund. I chose this model for my sister who loves dogs and even goes to the extent of feeding homeless dogs as well as the neighbor’s dog (in addition to our pet dog) just because “they are cute and they might be hungry” or maybe she doesn’t like what’s cooked… who knows? Can never trust her real motives
This is a slightly complicated model and is intermediate in terms of level of complexity. It is better that the folder has some experience in folding and is not a beginner. I have followed John Montroll’s book – Mythological Creatures and the Chinese Zodiac in Origami – for the diagram of this dog.
This model took me around 2 hours for me to fold and I daresay I did get stuck in a couple of places in between, too! John Montroll has put in a lot of effort to illustrate his diagrams really well and this makes it easier to follow. I made a slight change to the way the tail is designed to be in order to make it look more like my pet dog’s.
I used a larger sized square paper of 8 ¼” for this model. It came in animal prints and was double sided. I made do with a black and white zebra striped design for this model as I was not able to get the solid colored Origami paper of a desired size. I would recommend proper origami paper, which you can buy from your local stores or from Amazon.com; the construction paper variety just doesn’t fold well with intermediate origami models because of the fine folds.
You will be able to find instruction to this model on pages – 61 to 63 – in John Montroll’s book. You can also tweak the dog’s tail to curve in whichever direction you please. John Montroll’s design asks for a crimp at the top, which makes it a downward curve after finished.
You can tweak this a bit to allow the tail to curve upwards to give the impression of a ‘happy wag’.
This design I found forms a base for many of John Montroll’s animals in his book. I think you will be seeing a couple of more animals hopping along since I seemed to have got a hang of this one at least.

This dog looks really cute and just looking at its picture makes me feel that it is about to wag its cute little tail
he is soo cute..i can defenitely have him as a pet!! wont shed hair, wont bite my couch off..wont dirty the carpet!!! LOL
The tail is a little ‘tweak’ of my own on John Montroll’s original design. Glad you like it, Manshu!
Haha..yeah thats true, Manju! Let me know what color of a dog you would like, will definitely fold one for you…
I did this under two hours, but I’m yet to get it this good looking, I’ll keep trying. If you don’t mind me asking however, where did you get paper that big? all I can find are smaller sheets. I would like to make possibly a close to lifesize model to provide a nice environment for a party.
I used a square sheet of origami paper measureing 8 ¼” which I bought online from Amazon.com. The link to this paper product can be found in the “PAPER SUPPLIES” section / page of my site. Its an animal print origami paper which I used for this particular model. If you want it close to life size, I guess you should be able to find paper rolls at your local craft store. But, I really wouldn’t know what size you would require.
