Waterbomb Tessellation (Design by Eric Gjerde)

This is my second tessellation design this year and I must say I am quite enjoying these. One can find this particular model in the book Origami Tessellations: Awe-Inspiring Geometric Designs, By Eric Gjerde in the ‘beginner’ project section; hence this is one of the simple models in this book.

It takes around 15 minutes to fold this model and one can decide the end formation i.e. a ‘spread out’ water bomb design or a tightly held water bomb design. This choice has a lot to do with the type of paper you select to begin your folding.

Paper to use:

I cut a 12-inch square sheet from a roll of wrapping paper, which I had with me. This is because I wanted a larger sized tessellation. The ideal size to start off with is 15 cm or 6-inches which is the size of paper you get in the origami packs.

How to fold this model:

Sara Adams has uploaded a very detailed instructional video on this model, which one can follow easily. She has used a 6-inch sheet of paper in that. The CP for this model is found in the book Origami Tessellations: Awe-Inspiring Geometric Designs, By Eric Gjerde

My next attempt in the category of tessellations would be the high-density hydrangea by Shuzo Fujimoto. I find that design looking really pretty

Hydrangea (Design by Shuzo Fujimoto)

This is my first attempt at any tessellation, and I daresay I have selected one of the simpler, less complex but nonetheless pretty ones to fold. This dainty pattern is designed by Shuzo Fujimoto who is known for his dainty and sometimes intricate tessellation patterns.

Paper to use:
My initial attempt at folding this model was with tissue paper and that failed horribly. I guess tissue paper is too delicate and thin for such type of folds which are almost akin to ’sinks’. In this successful attempt of mine, I have used common, square shaped, single side colored origami paper measuring 9 inches in size; and it worked wonderfully.

How to fold Fujimoto’s Hydrangea:
Sara Adams has recorded and uploaded a fantastic instructional video on Shuzo Fujimoto’s Hydrangea. I am sure you will find it easy to follow. She even explains how to go about with creating the CP for it.

What I have attempted is a 4-stage Hydrangea (just like in the instructional video). You can increase the number of layers / stages in this model, too.
